There is a lot of hype in the media that hybrids and EV’s are the answer to save the world when it comes to cars. However, they ignore the fact that EV’s are hugely expensive and have very limited range, and that hybrids rarely get the mileage they claim. On top of that there is the $5,000+ premium you have to pay for them over a standard version of the same car.
For over a decade Volkswagen has pioneered efficient diesel engines in a broad range of their cars, and getting real world fuel economy that humbles the media darlings. For the third year in a row Volkswagen has been honored by Wards Auto as having one of the 10 Best Engines with the 2.0 liter TDI Clean Diesel engine.
In awarding the TDI engine this honor, Wards had this to say:
“The Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its 2.0L 140-hp turbodiesel, becomes the dean of the Ward’s 10 Best Engines list, the only returning winner with three consecutive wins at the same output levels with the same technologies onboard.
This quiet, pleasurable, torque-rich 4-cyl. demonstrates the finest attributes of the new generation of clean diesels, using regenerating particulate filters and oxidation catalysts to meet federal emissions standards.
The 2.0L engine’s small footprint lets it function without expensive urea-injection aftertreatment. There is no better vehicle for a roadtrip than the Jetta TDI, capable of 5.6 L/100 km.”
